The book is actually a play, and the original movie was made in the late 50s. The 1997 version lifted the dialogue right from the screenplay for the original movie, if I am not mistaken. However, I cannot attest to that in a court of law, so you are probably better off reading it than trying to watch the new version of the movie. If you are going to skip reading, and watch the movie instead, then for heaven's sake, watch the old one with Henry Fonda. That one, I am sure, is a good match for the original play, as the playwrite did the adaptation for screen.
