American Psycho is a psychological thriller and satirical novel by Bret Easton Ellis, published in 1991. The story is told in the first person by fictitious serial killer and Manhattan businessman Patrick Bateman. The graphic violence and sexual content generated much controversy before and since publication. Nearly twenty years on, Ellis's work has recently been described as "one of the key novels of the last century." A film adaptation starring Christian Bale was released in 2000 to generally favorable reviews. The Observer notes that while "some countries [deem it] so potentially disturbing that it can only be sold shrink-wrapped", "critics rave about it" and "academics revel in its transgressive and postmodern qualities". In 2008, it was confirmed that producers Craig Roessler and Jesse Singer were developing a musical adaptation of the novel to appear on Broadway.

Why are mistaken identities a recurring theme in American Psycho?
Q. I have read the novel and seen the movie and I still don't understand why people are frequently mistaken for other people. I also don't understand why people don't understand or listen to Patrick when he says clearly psychotic things.

A. Also, if you had read the novel, you may have picked up on the extraordinary ending, which I interpreted as the fact that NONE of those things in the book actually took place, it was all day dreams he was having to make his life more interesting and more livable, because you could tell bale's character was increasingly desperate to be noticed, but at the same time becoming complacent with the mundane ritual of life. The book is much, much better than the movie, because I felt like the movie just left you to believe Bale's character was a nut job in the 80's. The book really explored his psychosis better.

American Psycho is a 2000 film about a young, well-to-do man who isn't quite as normal as he seems....once you notice all the body parts of women he keeps in his apartment.

Directed by Mary Harron. Written by Mary Harron and Guinevere Turner, based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis.

Patrick Bateman

  • [repeated line] I have to return some videotapes.
  • I live in the American Gardens Building on W. 81st Street on the 11th floor. My name is Patrick Bateman. I'm 27 years old. I believe in taking care of myself and a balanced diet and rigorous exercise routine. In the morning if my face is a little puffy I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.
