What is a good way to build characters for a story?
Q. I'm writing a new story and I'm formulating characters, but unlike my other story where my characters came easily, I'm having problems creating and visualizing characters without being influenced. An example is, if I try to think of a king or a warrior I think of the movie character Aragon from lord of the rings... What can I do to help me formulate memorable characters? What about memorable locations in the story so that I dont just add them for filler? Thanks in advance.

A. What I do is come up with random quirks about them. Write it all down in a list. This is SO HARD sometimes, but it's good because as you create these small details, you'll start filling in the gaps with bigger things, and begin creating a fleshy person. Also, try to come up with pros and cons. This will make your character much more real.

How can I make my two main characters somehow more 3-D than my other characters?
Q. So I'm writing a novel, and it centers around two teens, and I want them to literally just jump off of the pages. I want them to somehow be different in dimension than the other characters. I'm doing really extensive character outlining, completely random facts and habits of the two of them, but my question is if I should do the outlining for my other characters quite so thoroughly. Would that make the language of the story sort of zero in on Cat and Samuel, or would that just make the writing uneven? I'm going to do basic outlinings on all my characters so I know them and their past, but do I need to do the same amount for all of them? Should I do it extremely thoroughly for Cat and Samuel and only do a light outline of the others, or do… [cont.]

A. I think real characters are complicated - they're never just good or bad. The background details don't necessarily make them more 3-D, although it can help. I think your main characters will jump out merely because they appear in most of the story - while other characters come and go (appear briefly). All characters should be well detailed - but your main story is the two, so they will get the most "time onscreen". Because of this - they are the ones that go through whatever challenge and "develop" because of it (become more mature, die from drug usage, whatever) as the story goes along. This isn't necessary with secondary characters.

Q. You see, there are five characters with a special power, four are friends and rivals, two are guardians, one is the princess, and the remaining five are the group of people trying to take over the universe. How do the characters in the Harry Potter series manage to stay so fit?
Q. In the Harry Potter series, most of the characters tend to be reasonably fit, some skinny. And yet, how is this possible? There is no mention of any workout room in Hogwarts, and casting spells doesn't seem to be real activity. There are three huge meals a day, and the only sport is Quidditch, which isn't really active, just sitting on a broom. How do you think all the characters manage to remain so fit?

A. Have you seen the size of that castle? There are 142 staircases! I suppose that's why you only see a few chubby Slytherin's (Crabbe & Goyle) because their common room is in the dungeons so they don't have to walk up hundreds of flights of stairs to get there!

A. you need to install japanese/asian languages. You go to control panel, and from there go to the 'Date, Time, Languages and Regional Options' category. From there it will say 'Pick A Task' and you choose the 'Add Other Languages' When the dialogue box comes up, look down at the section that says "Supplemental Language Support" Tick the box that says 'Install files for complex script' and Tick the box that says 'Install files for East Asian Languages' It will tell you it will take up a certain amount of space and just go 'OK' You should only need the East Asian ones so, you can tick that box only if you like, but I ticked the Complex script one as well, cause you never know when you may need them.

How does copyright work for cartoon characters?
Q. I wrote a comic-book story that intriduced my characters a number of years back and got it copyrighted. Does it mean that the characters in that sotry were copyrighted? If I make a new comic story that features characters related to the other ones are they copyrighted also? Or can I simply put my name and a circled-c and the year on my work? Please let me know. Thanks.
Asked by Jason G. - Mon Jan 4 19:41:10 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. works like this (assuming you did get it copyrighted) 1) the comic book story CANNOT be claimedas being made by another person therefore 2)all charters in the comic are also yours and cannot be used by someone else without your permission. (im talking about how your character looks like. as for names, only unique names can be claimed ex:superman, spider-man.names like john and Sam dont cut it unless you also gave them last names)

Where can I find character designers names for the old Mario game characters?
Q. I am looking online for a list of the original Japanese character designers for the original mario characters. I am wanting to know who did the character designs for Mario and the main clan, but especially any enemy character from Super Mario Bros 1, 2, or 3. More specifically, I would really like to know who invented or did the character designs for the original koopa kids. (koopalings). I've wanted to know for years, and still can't find anything. Thank you.
Asked by Brandon R - Tue Mar 10 18:54:18 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You wouldn't be able to actually find out. I'm sure you could check the credits of the games for the main designer and the enemy designer names and things like that, but it wouldn't have specifics. Although the first Mario was made by Shigeru Miyamoto, Hiroshi Yamauchi and Takashi Tezuka so all the original stuff was made by those 3. Also, each original Koopa Kid was designed by a separate staff member, as a way to honor the creators of the games personally.3

A. You paint them on the inside primarily to protect it from the elements and people who might try to vandalism them by scratching the paint. Acrylic paints should work fine. It is the process of laying down the paint that may cause some frustration. If you are laying down flat color (by this I mean no blending or shading) you shouldn't have any problems. I've played around a long time ago with painting on glass and noticed that the first color that touched the glass was what was seen and that any blending might not get through or completely blend. You may want to do a web search for painting glass or painting on glass techniques. The African country of Senegal (if it's still named that) has/had a tradition of painting on glass. Although… [cont.]

Is my characters actions legal or just immoral?
Q. I am writing a story and believe that I have come up with a good plot line. However, I am not sure if my characters actions are illegal or just immoral. I thought of calling a lawyer, but I would not be able to pay for a consultation. What other sources are there? I am planning on having my character do something that most people in passing wouldn't even think is illegal or at least nothing more than a misdemeanor, but results in someone's unintentional death. I'm just trying to be realistic as to whether he winds up in an emotional jail or a literal jail?

How can I type special characters when using a laptop keyboard?
Q. I have a DELL Latitude D610 laptop. And I always wonder how I can type in characters that are usually not found on the keyboard. I understand that when using an ordinary keyboard with a numeric pad, i can simply key in ALT+Code (which I can reference through the Character Map). Or I can simply use the character map, select the character and copy-paste to say my word processor. My keyboard (laptop) has a Fn key, but when I use it to say use the numeric keypad (an alternate in the keys around the letter "K"), it doesn't seem to work. Am I missing something? I'd prefer to enter characters using the ALT+Code method, instead of copy-paste from character map.

A. Reper to page for other special symbols Windows - Alt Key Numeric Codes This page list codes for accented letters and other characters. In order to use these codes, your computer should have a separate numeric keypad on the right. If it does not, then another method of inputting accents is recommended. The list is organized by type. If you need more information on how to type the codes, please read the detailed instructions. These tables show select codes only, not all possible codes. 1. Letters with Accents - (e.g. o, o, n) 2. A. I would say the group should meet up through a life threatening situation or something that is important to all them joining them together as a group. Like someone could be ill, two of the group could want to join because they fell bad, one likes to steal so he comes along and the others just want plain fun. Or in a death situation one of them could be held prisoner and the other who think he is interest follow to save him.

A. You'll need to write a script to do this. After much searching, I couldn't find anything specifically designed to do what you're looking to do, but with some creative combination of a selection script and a clipboard-cutting script, it's certainly doable. This site here (see below) contains lots of Q&A with a scripting guru; if nothing quite helps, I would suggest posting this question on that forum; he can likely write something in minutes that will do what you need to do.
