What if you put fuel additive in your gas tank without filling up your tank with gas?
Q. I put a bottle of the fuel additive in my gas tank and then drove to the gas station (About 1 mile or less away). When I got to the gas station, I filled up my tank. But on the way to the gas station, I noticed that my car started hesitating and not accelerating as normal. Then my check enpermanentlycame on! I hope I didn't permanently damage anything... It does fine after the initial hesitation. Do you think it just needs to run through the tank of gas?

A. There are many reasons a check engine light comes on.. running low on fuel, loose gas cap.. or as you suggested, a high concentration of hard to burn fuel ( additive) in the tank.. it's not likely though..Best bet is to have the car checked out, and find out the real reason the light is coming on..Additives have their place as part of preventive maintenance on older cars.. but newer cars are highly adaptive/ tolerant (thanks to modern fuel injection and engine management), and usually will not develop a problem until something is seriously wrong that requires actual repair/ attention..

Will you get better gas mileage with an almost empty tank of gas?
Q. Fuel adds weight to a car and with a full tank of gas you're burning more gas hauling around the weight of that full tank of gas. What does gas weigh a gallon? How can I measure my gas mileage without filling up the gas tank?
Asked by Joe B - Mon Jun 9 18:48:10 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. 6 pounds a gallon, don't go rushing to the bank with your big savings, lol! You might save 1, 2% tops. I don't know a way to get a hard measurement of gas mileage without filling up the tank. Even measuring from fillup to fillup isn't perfectly accurate because different pumps click off at slightly different places. Best to average over 2-3 consecutive fillups.

Can water in my gas tank cause misfire and check engine light to come on and now its flashing?
Q. Had alternator replaced and when fixed battery was dead, while letting battery charge the truck ran out of gas (I know) we added gas from a gas can in the pouring down rain and now I have engine misfire, rough idling, first my check engine light was just on, now it occasionally flashes. How can I fix this? I've added gas treatment but I'm 3/4 full on my tank will it clear up when gas runs through or should I add gas to it now to neutralize the bad gas?
Asked by Leigha - Wed Apr 2 13:17:40 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I doubt it's the water causing this. There is a plate on the fuel inlet where you put gas in. The radius of the plate is equal to the gas can nozzle. I would take it to a shop and get it scanned. Maybe something got knocked loose when you had the alternator replaced or something didn't get plugged back in properly. Also fyi, the worst thing to do for a fuel pump is to run it out of gas, the gas is what keeps the fuel pump running cool so you may have damaged the fuel pump as well because it got too hot.

Q. i doubt they make replacement gas tanks but it seems like a shame to have to scrap an otherwise good lawnmower because of a removable gas tank. can i get replacement parts for a 5 year old lawnmower?
Asked by Twist - Tue Jul 1 23:51:26 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Replacement tanks are actually fairly easy to get, even in sizes up to 6 gallons. As to whether yours could be repaired, rather depends on just where the leak is at. Are you sure it isnt where the fuel line connects to the tank? If it is just that connection, perhaps a simple band clamp will take care of it. If it is the fuel line, then that too can be replaced with ease. Sears will of course, have replacement parts, you just need to know your model number. Many of these parts can be found online too. Here is an ebay search for 'craftsman mower gas tank', and it turned up several different models, both new and old - Good Luck

A. here you go 1. look for the reservoir switch/ gas on and off switch once you locate it find the fuel line that plugs in to the switch. 2 you will see two fuel lines one going into the switch and the other leading off to the motor. 3. disconnect the line that leads off t the motor by removing the metal clamp and slowly wiggling it until it becomes free. 4. (optional) to keep gas from leaking everywhere go to the auto part store and get some hose the same size as the fuel line on the bike and hook it temporally to the shut off valve without any clamps and run it to a gas can or some other container that way you do not have a big puddle of gas under your bike. 5. once you get your container in place to catch the old gas turn the fuel… [cont.]

How do I fix pinholes in my old honda 50 gas tank?
Q. I have a 72 Honda 50 and it has a section that has holes in the gas tank. Is there some kind of epoxy, compound, solder or something else that I can put on tank so that it will hold gas?
Asked by Eric H - Sun May 18 18:36:15 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments
A. repair large pinholes with NuMetal epoxy putty then you must seal the inside of the tank permanently with Gold Standard Tank Sealer. Apply left over Sealer to the repaired exterior areas. Choose a KBS Coatings kit for your gallon size tank and follow the directions. The Sealer will withstand today's fuels and can withstand vibration of the tank. Unlike Kreem, this Sealer interlocks with the metal tank. The insideof the tank will look like new again with a silver metallic coating.

How can I remove rust from inside a gas tank?
Q. I have a 30 year old motorcycle gas tank that is in very good condition but for some rust inside the tank. It was in dry storage for all these years, but in a humid climate. Is there anything easily available to remove the rust? It's likely that The Eastwood Company has a chemical solution that would do the job but I was looking more for a home remedy.

A. Most of the given suggestions should help. I would remove the petcock at intervals in your cleaning process and use compressed air. Flush with a little fresh gas when you're ready. Install an in-line filter and change it often. They don't cost that much and there will probably be a little rust in the tank forever. Good luck.

A. spend 5 bucks before u spend 200... Probablly ur tank is made out of aluminium (chemical resistance and light also), so find a professional aluminium epoxy, like JB Weld... but find the right one, are a lot on the market...looks for aluminium epoxi that are made out of 2 clear tubes, should be almost liquid, and easy to mix.. If you find the right one you should have no problem...patched it over a bigger area, 1/8 thicknes to 1/4 thickness... I used one for my battery as well.. it does work Duck tape does not work, petroleum product is gonna melt it

How to convert your gas tank to take alternate fuels?
Q. I have read about how easily other countries convert their gas tanks to accept other fuel source. I hear the occasional story here, about successful gas tank conversations. Is this something that can be done easily. Can I learn how...and charge others? Is this a good business venture. I meant the car. And actually yes...some countries in the developing nation convert the tanks and/or engines depending on the type of conversation. It is amazing what other countries can do with limited resources.

A. which alternate fuels are you referring to? with ethanol or diesel you only need change the fuel lines, and remove any plastic from the tank. if you are talking about fuels like LPG, cng, etc. these fuels require that you swap the stock fuel tank for one that can handle high pressures, usually about 350psi or so. you also need to change other parts of the fuel system like the carb or fuel injection to a "propane" carb. this meters a gaseous state fuel in the proper amounts for combustion.

We've dropped the gastank 3 times now and have used gas and carb cleaner to try and rid the gastank of the gunk that seems to stick along the walls. So far nothing has completely worked. A. when you "top it off" you end up with more gas FUMES in the tank. you put that out into the environment. so if you let it get kind of low (without the car stopping on the freeway) then you fill it up. you get more gas and less fumes. therefor you emit less co2 into the air :]
