How do I link an external gas tank to my original tank to let it run longer between refuels?
Q. This is for a power generator that has a small gas tank and only runs for 2.7 hrs. I hear there may be a special gas cap adapter and / or setup that would allow me to link an external gas tank to the original and allow me to run the generator longer. Is this possible?
Asked by Sir Beto - Mon Jun 16 20:09:24 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm sure it is possible. Ask where you're making the purchase if it can be done with an adapter, they might know. Someone gave me a thumbs down :o( If they know a better answer why didn't they post it? I hope they feel better now!

Will you get better gas mileage with an almost empty tank of gas?
Q. Fuel adds weight to a car and with a full tank of gas you're burning more gas hauling around the weight of that full tank of gas. What does gas weigh a gallon? How can I measure my gas mileage without filling up the gas tank?
Asked by Joe B - Mon Jun 9 18:48:10 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. 6 pounds a gallon, don't go rushing to the bank with your big savings, lol! You might save 1, 2% tops. I don't know a way to get a hard measurement of gas mileage without filling up the tank. Even measuring from fillup to fillup isn't perfectly accurate because different pumps click off at slightly different places. Best to average over 2-3 consecutive fillups.

What if you put fuel additive in your gas tank without filling up your tank with gas?
Q. I put a bottle of the fuel additive in my gas tank and then drove to the gas station (About 1 mile or less away). When I got to the gas station, I filled up my tank. But on the way to the gas station, I noticed that my car started hesitating and not accelerating as normal. Then my check enpermanentlycame on! I hope I didn't permanently damage anything... It does fine after the initial hesitation. Do you think it just needs to run through the tank of gas?
Asked by Christy - Tue Aug 12 20:04:03 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are many reasons a check engine light comes on.. running low on fuel, loose gas cap.. or as you suggested, a high concentration of hard to burn fuel ( additive) in the tank.. it's not likely though..Best bet is to have the car checked out, and find out the real reason the light is coming on..Additives have their place as part of preventive maintenance on older cars.. but newer cars are highly adaptive/ tolerant (thanks to modern fuel injection and engine management), and usually will not develop a problem until something is seriously wrong that requires actual repair/ attention..

How can i open the gas tank when the button release won't work?
Q. I have a '98 old intrigue and it usually has a gas door release button by the driver side panel. Yesterday i went to hit the button and it didn't make the usual "thud", just a click noise. I tried going through the trunk, but that didn't work. Is this a big problem, or will it fix itself? I need gas in the tank.

A. if the two person methods mentioned above dont work you can always get to the fill tube neck from under the car and take the fill neck off then open door from the inside so to speak doing it your self is a hell of a lot cheaper than paying any of us mechanics to do it...

You cant get any leverage much less tools to put clamp on b/c of drive shaft. Does drive shaft have to be removed?? This male is under the car attached to gas tank so removal of gas tank doesnt help.

A. The drive shaft MUST be removed... If you are in a northern climate and don't have the proper tools, let a garage do the work...

seems to be a leak in the gas tank of my lawnmower. its a plastic tank, craftsman lawnmower. can i seal it?
Q. i doubt they make replacement gas tanks but it seems like a shame to have to scrap an otherwise good lawnmower because of a removable gas tank. can i get replacement parts for a 5 year old lawnmower?
Asked by Twist - Tue Jul 1 23:51:26 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Replacement tanks are actually fairly easy to get, even in sizes up to 6 gallons. As to whether yours could be repaired, rather depends on just where the leak is at. Are you sure it isnt where the fuel line connects to the tank? If it is just that connection, perhaps a simple band clamp will take care of it. If it is the fuel line, then that too can be replaced with ease. Sears will of course, have replacement parts, you just need to know your model number. Many of these parts can be found online too. Here is an ebay search for 'craftsman mower gas tank', and it turned up several different models, both new and old - Good Luck

How do you disconect the fuel lines from the gas tank on a 91 Mercury Grand Marquis?
Q. I am trying to remove the gas tank so I can use the car in a demolition derby. I have dropped the tank, but it is still dangling because the two fuel lines that go from the engine to the fuel pump are still connected. I have tried pulling and twisting as hard as I can, but I cant undo the connections. I would like to keep these fuel lines intact so I can still use them for the relocated tank.
Asked by Grant G - Wed Sep 19 13:18:20 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Quick-connect (push type) fuel line fittings must be disconnected using proper procedure or the fitting may be damaged. There are two types of retainers used on the push connect fittings. Line sizes of 3/8 and 5/16 in. diameter use a hairpin clip retainer. The 1/4 in. diameter line connectors use a duck-bill clip retainer. In addition, some engines use spring-lock connections, secured by a garter spring, which require Ford Tool T81P-19623-G (or equivalent) for removal. You can get this at most Autozone stores. Is it safe to use 70% rubbing alcohol in the gas tank to keep things clean and avoid winter gas line freezing?
Q. Will adding rubbing alcohol to the gas tank do any damage to anything? Are any of the gas treatments safe?
Asked by Steven N - Wed Jan 2 06:52:47 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol 70% means you would be adding 30% water to your tank (not what you want is it?) what you need is ethanol, you can buy it as an additive or simply fill up with gas that has ethanol added.

How do I fix pinholes in my old honda 50 gas tank?
Q. I have a 72 Honda 50 and it has a section that has holes in the gas tank. Is there some kind of epoxy, compound, solder or something else that I can put on tank so that it will hold gas?
Asked by Eric H - Sun May 18 18:36:15 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. repair large pinholes with NuMetal epoxy putty then you must seal the inside of the tank permanently with Gold Standard Tank Sealer. Apply left over Sealer to the repaired exterior areas. Choose a KBS Coatings kit for your gallon size tank and follow the directions. The Sealer will withstand today's fuels and can withstand vibration of the tank. Unlike Kreem, this Sealer interlocks with the metal tank. The insideof the tank will look like new again with a silver metallic coating.

A. spend 5 bucks before u spend 200... Probablly ur tank is made out of aluminium (chemical resistance and light also), so find a professional aluminium epoxy, like JB Weld... but find the right one, are a lot on the market...looks for aluminium epoxi that are made out of 2 clear tubes, should be almost liquid, and easy to mix.. If you find the right one you should have no problem...patched it over a bigger area, 1/8 thicknes to 1/4 thickness... I used one for my battery as well.. it does work Duck tape does not work, petroleum product is gonna melt it

How to convert your gas tank to take alternate fuels?
Q. I have read about how easily other countries convert their gas tanks to accept other fuel source. I hear the occasional story here, about successful gas tank conversations. Is this something that can be done easily. Can I learn how...and charge others? Is this a good business venture. I meant the car. And actually yes...some countries in the developing nation convert the tanks and/or engines depending on the type of conversation. It is amazing what other countries can do with limited resources.

A. which alternate fuels are you referring to? with ethanol or diesel you only need change the fuel lines, and remove any plastic from the tank. if you are talking about fuels like LPG, cng, etc. these fuels require that you swap the stock fuel tank for one that can handle high pressures, usually about 350psi or so. you also need to change other parts of the fuel system like the carb or fuel injection to a "propane" carb. this meters a gaseous state fuel in the proper amounts for combustion.

How do I connect gas tank to a bbq?
Q. I bought a small bbq (my first in my life) and I have no idea how to connect it to the gas tank. I bought a one pound propane gas tank. I know it has to be connected to the regulator/control valve (according to the manual that came with the bbq) but I'm not sure how to do it and I don't want to get hurt. Am I supposed to open the cover of the gas tank and 'screw' the valve instead of the cover? Please help!!! orf1943 yes i did it and it works! thank you so much for your help - i really appreciate it!
Asked by Eva - Fri Jul 20 18:34:01 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes. When you remove the plastic cap from the propane tank, you'll see threads on it. Look for a fitting on the BBQ that will accept the tank. Just insert the tank into the fitting and screw it hand tight. *** added info *** Did you get it, yet? There should be a tube on the BBQ with a fitting at the end. It is underneath (usually, depends on the brand of the grill), and allows you to connect the tank at a safe distance from the heat.

How do I flush the gas tank on a 1995 Chevrolet Truck?
Q. The truck has been sitting for 4 years and I think the tank needs to be flushed. A mechanic told me that all I need to do is put in a gas treatment when I fill it up. Any advice will be much appreciated. Thank you.
Asked by Matt - Tue Jun 2 11:39:44 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Best bet is to drop the tank and clear the lines to get rid of old nasty gas. Then fill it up and add a bottle of fuel injection cleaner. Also after 4 years of sitting, the fuel pump is probably shot, so a new one would serve as a good starting point. I bought one from Napa, they come with the new in tank wiring, otherwise you will have to buy the wiring separate.
